Imbalance in the vaginal flora, pH shift

What happens to the vaginal flora?

An imbalance in the vaginal flora, left untreated, can grow into a bacterial vaginal infection. An imbalance in the vaginal flora (also called ‘dysbiosis’) can be detected from a change in the acidity of the vagina (pH greater than 4.5). The pH level in the vagina is measured by a gynaecologist. A pH from 3.8 to 4.4 is normal, and can be achieved by rapid acidification with lactic acid, respectively. This measure supports the remaining vaginal flora.

Vaginal yeast infection

What happens to the vaginal flora?

Vaginal yeast infections occur due to an imbalance in the vaginal flora with highly excessive yeast populations. For that reason, it makes sense to restore and/or stabilise a strong defensive vaginal flora with probiotics after treating a yeast infection with drugs – particularly in women who are susceptible to recurrent yeast infections.

What is the goal?

To restore the vaginal flora.

Which product can help me?

Oral or vaginal probiotics may be useful to restore/stabilise the vaginal flora.

Hormonal fluctuations e.g. menopause, pregnancy, breastfeeding, oral contraceptives (‘the pill’)

What happens to the vaginal flora?

Hormonal fluctuations may also affect the vaginal flora and so be accompanied by vaginal infections. The acidification of the vagina with lactic acid supports the remaining vaginal flora and thus helps prevent vaginal infections.

Other vaginal infections e.g. bacterial vaginal infections

What happens to the vaginal flora?

Bacterial vaginal infections are usually treated initially with drugs. Some of these drugs also kill the ‘good’ lactobacilli; in these cases a subsequent treatment with probiotics (lactobacilli) makes sense to restore the vaginal flora. Women who are susceptible to recurrent vaginal infections are further advised to take probiotics on a preventative basis. Studies have even shown that the composition of the vaginal flora in these women is different from that of ‘healthy’ women, often lacking the important lactobacilli for defence against vaginal infections.

Pregnancy

What happens to the vaginal flora?

The hormonal balance changes during pregnancy, which can lead to an imbalance in the vaginal flora. An imbalance in the vaginal flora, left untreated, can grow into a bacterial vaginal infection. Because an imbalance in the vaginal flora, like a bacterial vaginal infection, raises the risk of premature birth, it is important to check the vaginal environment regularly and maintain a healthy vaginal flora.

An imbalance in the vaginal flora (also called ‘dysbiosis’) can be detected from a change in the acidity of the vagina (pH greater than 4.5). The pH level in the vagina is generally measured by a gynaecologist. Self measurement is also possible after consulting a doctor.

A pH from 3.8 to 4.4 is normal and can be achieved by rapid acidification with lactic acid. This measure supports the remaining vaginal flora. The use of Dr Wolff’s Vagisan Lactic Acid or probiotics should be undertaken after consulting your gynaecologist, as the use of any drug or other health product during pregnancy should be discussed with a doctor.

Taking antibiotics e.g. for bronchitis, tonsillitis

Taking antibiotics e.g. for bronchitis, tonsillitis

Taking antibiotics can affect the vaginal flora and disrupt the natural defence system in the vagina. Vaginal yeast infections often result. The vaginal use of probiotics AFTER completion of antibiotic therapy has the goal of restoring a strong defensive vaginal flora.

Recurrent vaginal infections after sexual intercourse

What happens to the vaginal flora?

Sperm is alkaline (pH level greater than 7) and causes a temporary shift in the pH level of the vagina. Normally, the natural vaginal defence system corrects this shift. In women who are susceptible to recurrent vaginal infections, this correction may not work quickly enough, which can lead to a reappearance of the bacterial vaginal infection, particularly after intercourse. The acidification of the vagina with lactic acid quickly counterbalances / buffers the alkalinity of the sperm and supports the existing vaginal flora.

Taking antibiotics e.g. for vaginal infections

What happens to the vaginal flora?

The vaginal application of antibiotics or other drugs for vaginal infections often kills the ‘good’ lactobacilli in the vagina along with the ‘bad’ or disease-causing pathogens. In such a case, it is helpful to restore the vaginal flora with probiotics after treatment is finished.

Recurrent bacterial vaginal infections after menstruation

What happens to the vaginal flora?

Menstrual blood is alkaline (pH level greater than 7) and causes a temporary shift in the pH level of the vagina. Normally, the natural vaginal defence system corrects this shift.
